Some of the replies were along the lines that people think India is a poor country or that they generalize or that this poor image is due to the likes of Satyajit Ray (who is the most respected Indian filmmaker in the West BTW!!) and Mother Teresa (who was the most revered Indian of her time when alive!!), and someone even said Ameircans say "India ia a land of snakes and elephants."
