Banana Republic
by arun arun on Feb 21, 2008 11:04 AM

The mindset of the Paki rulers of yore and present is pathetically fuedalistic. The arrest and retention of the Judiciary is a lesson to others about how breakdown of machineries for governance happen in banana republics. The army chief Gen Kiyani is currently playing the role of a nation builder, albeit unwittingly. The army's silence gives voice to other arms of governance and hence the demands for reinstatement. Our experience with the army brass of pakistan suggests that this may well be temporary phase and there could be stirrings at the higher levels of army echelons to retain power and restore the "glory" the army commanded for 60 years. Gen Kiyanio is known to be a common mans chief , but the moot point is , is he the armyman's chief?. Musharaff is capable of undercutting Kiyani through the many Lt generals he had propped up during his 8 year rule.Only time will tell, but another angle to this saga could be the rift between strange bedfellows like nawaz andzardari. Expect another take over in 6 months or fresh elections, because nawaz will win hands down in 6 months when the benazir sympathy wave subsides. Even with the wave in place he managed to gather success at the hustings. One thing is sure, the economy of pakistan is bound to flounder in the meanwhile. The army will have to suffer setbacks in the fight against militancy, with no political role to play anymore, the ISI will try and forment trouble in India. Theres a lot going to happen in south Asia
