Hindi is a majority language in India. Agreed!! Does that make Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Malayalam or any regional Language less important??? Arent these Languages as Indian as Hindi?? There severely needs to be Language-Secularism as well. There are more than one instances of this. To quote a few instances that I have seen in recent times, my wife and her Marathi friend attended the baby shower of a Hindi speaking friend(originally from Jaipur) in our neighbourhood(We live in USA.). This Jaipur friend's in-laws were visiting from India. My daughter and my wife's Marathi friend's children accompanied along. The Delhi friend's in-laws started talking to these kids in Hindi and the kids were clueless. These Hindi speaking Jaipurias took offense that we parents were not teaching the kids to be Indian because they did not know Hindi. My wife and her Marathi friends retorted that the kids speak our respective mother tongues. There is growing belief that Hindi is thrust upon us without choice. This is true if you take public school in India. Growing up in Mumbai, I has to learn three languages English, Hindi & Marathi. Hindi and Marathi are not languages that we spoke at home so my grades were not good in these languages. Compare this to a 10th grade local student of Bihar, UP, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh ?? Does he not have it easy with just two languages? continued
