Dear Mrs. Chaddha,

My post is only indicative of general publics initial reaction, which later gets tempered by the our conditioning.

It may sound medieval, but it is in a way appropriate to give a punishment by the court somewhat like a lashes in a public square!

The article says, even if he is convicted, at best he would get a 10 year imprisonment. No one in the public sees what kind of imprisonment that it is!

One of the main objectives of punishment is not only punishing the culprit but also to prevent others from committing a similar crime. But where do public see the imprisonment? 40-50 lashes in a public square make potential future culprits think twice or thrice.

When we want to spare the lashes in public, we subconsciously are saving ourselves from the unpleasantness; we are not saving the culprit from the so called inhuman treatment. It is our own fear that comes into play.

By the way, regarding your CHOODIYAN remark, you have attributed cowardice to the entire womenfolk by that comment.

Wearing bangles is not a sign of cowardice but of womanhood in certain societies. My mother, my sister, my wife, my daughter, my friends who are women wear bangles. If it is so insulting I dont mind wearing bangles. Manhood is just about sperm and the biological the ability to produce children. Whereas courage is an attribute applicable to both the genders. And some in both the genders dont possess that trait.

Pl. restrain from using that women insulting phra
