Khanna's statement is laughable!
by VASUDEVAN V on Feb 08, 2008 12:55 PM

I am sure Mr.Khanna has made the statement without ever having visited Chennai. One visit to Chennai and he will find how law abiding Chennai drivers are! The two wheelers in Chennai mostly use the foot-paths as the bigger vehicles occupy the roads cheek by jowl and the two wheeler drivers are always in a hurry to reach their destination, wherever it may be, including `up above the world so high'. As for auto drivers, they are like any other auto driver anywhere in India. All they need is space for the front wheel, the auto will follow automatically. Next come the RTC (in Chennai they are called MTC)buses. Well they are a law unto themselves. They are closely followed by the Truck drivers. The less said the better about the truck drivers. You will only have to see all these vehicles standing near a traffic signal, jostling for space, not leaving even the white zeebra line for pedestrians to cross. Where does all this leave the pedestrians in Chennai? The Government of Tamilnadu is not interested in providing them proper foot-paths, nor in their safety. Even if foot-paths are there, they are totally occupied by hawkers. Pedestrians have to virtually walk on the roads, praying to God that they reach their destinations safely, especially as two-wheelers have made life hell for them! What Mr.Khanna has told is applicable to the whole of India. Indian drivers do not have traffic-sense and that is the truth.
