I recall being impressed with "Sholay" when I first saw it also. However in hind sight it was due more to the lack of exposure to good quality cinema among Indian audiences of that time. Sholay was liked by the people because it was different from the genre of films being made in India at that time. That was one of the first movies shown on a large screen. The plot itself is a mere copy of a typical Clint Eastwood western. Even the characters seem to be exact copies therefrom.
