Ashoka's acceptance of Buddhism has nothing to do with Hinduism being violent. Hinduism unlike monolithic religions provide flexibility to lead life in a practical sense. Ashoka's acceptance of Buddhism is because someone did a good job of convincing him that wars are not good. However, its a different matter that subsequent Indian generations became weak in art of war because of this decision by Ashoka which led to conquest by "religion of peace" from arabia!!
