The issues picked up by some fanatic people and the politicians are really disturbing. It is always great to learn the local languages, If you are working closely with local people. The fanatic approach taken by some leadears abour regionalism will lead the locals to nowhere. A very good example is Gujarat, If you go there, no body will be forcing you to talk the language they talk. It doesn't necessarily mean that they don't respect their local culture(being Gujarati), also they are not feared of the competition brought about by people from other parts of India- infact it is picked up as an opportunity by them. And see the result. At the same time the regional languages should be supported well. But then i think for that the responsibility stays with people having the language as their mother tongue.
