Why the Maoists won Nepal
by sudipta sarkar on Apr 21, 2008 09:30 AM

The article appears to be a thought-provoking one and must be appreciated for the 'critical' element inside it irrespective of whether some of the views are to be accepted or not. The Maoist movement in Nepal which is an extremist leftist movement, is an odd one out in the present day situation when most of the world has endorsed the Pro-capitalist market driven -economy and political systems. The Maoist movement in Nepal which rose to a such a height is not a part of a global leftist movement which took place many decades ago in East Europe, Asia and many other parts of the world. This is one good thing about the movement as it is not a part of a global revolution that swept the world many decades ago and in such widespread 'revolutions' there were possible scope of shallowness and less concern for the real cause and more of emotional outbursts that were temporary. The results of such a revolution led to the formation of many socialist nations which all finally ended up as highly hipocratic, autocratic and antihuman political systems. Another good thing about the Nepal's Maoists is that they were democratically elected unlike their counterparts of the past. However, the Maoist idealogy is known to be as an anarchist political philosophy and their movement over the last 10 years showed good signs of it. Therefore the question lies whether they are politically matured enough to sustainably run a nation's government in an organised and democratic way???
