Ashwatthama asks his father, Dhronacharya, as to why he asked Ekalavya's finger as Guru Dakshina...is it because he is from a lower caste? Dhronacharya replies....Ashwatthama has stolen education and he did not earn it in a proper way and hence, he did not deserve it. Even if it was a Brahmin or a Kshatriya, I would have done the same way.
