A Step Backward
by Vijeth CM on Apr 10, 2008 03:24 PM

Reservations (job or education) based on caste system is only a step backward for the development of the country. Successive governments have been garnering votes saying that they will help the poor & the backward. Ironically, even after 60 years of independence, neither the various schemes for the poor, nor the reservations have really helped the needy.

The government should rethink it's strategy. The best option is to provide free education (at all stages including professional courses) for all the economicaly backward students. Instead of reserving existing seats, efforts should be made to open more schools and colleges to provide free education. Only if this is done, the students who actually need help will derive benefits.

Also, reservation in jobs must be removed. People should be treated equally. THe government should not promote inferiority complex among the so called "backward classes", or promote superiority complex amont the so called "Upper/forward classes". Treat people equally if you really want harmony and development in the country.

Until then, poor will become poorer, rich will become richer. Governments "hands" will forever be with the poor because the poor will never become self-sufficient.
