yes hogenekkal may be derived from kannada but kannada itself is derived from Tamil as the following explanation will convince any wise soul.

hoge in tamil is pronounced as pogai and kal = kallu or kal in tamil also has the same meaning as stone.

a word similarly pronounced is hogi = poe in tamil which means go

kannada puts ho in place of po in tamil
