He was not after sita but went there to take revenge for his sister. laxshaman abused his sister and then cut her nose and ears. Any self respecting man will want to avenge his sister. Wouldn't you???? Ravana didn't do anything wrong but it was rama and laxshaman who were asking for trouble.
