For more than 800 millions of Hindus in India and millions of Hindus outside India throughout the world the RAMA SETHU BRIDGE is as holy and as sacred as the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to the Jews,the Vatican in Rome to the Roman Catholics,the Bodh Gaya in Bihar to theBuddhists and Mecca in Saudi Arabia to the Muslims.History and historical records indicate that the land mass in the form of a Bridge connecting Dhanushkoti to Talai Mannar, known as Ram Sethu or Ramar Bridge,AdiSethu, Nala Sethu has existed for centuries from times immemorial.One such historical record is the Ramanathapuram District Gazetteer in Tamil published by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu in 1972;with a %u2018Forward%u2019 dated 14 Jun 1972 by Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi,in which the Hon%u2019ble Chief Minister has said,%u201CTo those Policy makers,Scholars & Public interested in ascertaining authentic & reliable information, this district-wise gazetteer has been compiled as an encyclopedic reference'.And it is in this very gazetteer that it is mentioned, %u201CAdams bridge is also referred to as RAMA SETHU or ADI SETHU. The bridge is 15.5 miles east of Rameshwaram. This is called Ramar Palam because this bridge was built under the leadership of Hanuman and with the participation of Vaanara Sena and facilitated the crossing by Rama to reach Sri Lanka and to attain victory.
