I have been hearing about Sethusamudram Project for the last two years. Whenever Govt. or private companies initiate a project there will be opposition from all corners, particularly about land acquisition and environment etc. In this case it is not land acquisition, but religious sentiment that has become a major factor. But no one wants to talk about real issues. To know the real issues one should know the difference between Govt & Private projects. Private companies initiate projects only after a realistic study particularly about economic viability of the project because their priority is profit and they cannot afford to undertake any project which is likely to bring in loss. Contrast this to Govt projects where the politicians are not worried about profit but are interested only in political mileage by publicizing the benefits of the project and under-playing the disadvantages. Most of the Govt. projects are not economically viable, but due to political pressure, figures are manipulated to make it %u2018appear%u2019 viable.
In the light of the above, I made an attempt to study the controversial SSCP to know how far it is economically viable. Luckily I got all the necessary documents from the SSCP web site and other related websites.
