"Killing Them by the Wholesale": A Lynching Rampage in South Georgia. By: Meyers, Christopher C.. Georgia Historical Quarterly, Summer2006, Vol. 90 Issue 2, p214-235 The article provides information on the history of mob violence in the U.S. Mob violence and lynchings, which have a long history in the U.S., had become even more prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There were so many lynchings between 1880 and 1930 that two sociologists have called this period the "lynching era." The causes of lynchings in the South are just as difficult to pinpoint as the exact number of victims. Historians and sociologists have put forth numerous explanations and theories on what might provoke a violent outburst, but in the end it is virtually impossible to predict what exactly triggered a lynching.
