Sethusamudram - Ram Setu Controversy
by Yogeshwarnath Aggarwal on Sep 12, 2007 03:03 PM

Today there's a chakka Jam in Delhi to save Ram Setu, which would be destroyed in case the present route of Sethusamudram is finalized. Ram Setu is important, but the way this issue is highlighted gathers more opposition than support. By blocking roads to highlight such important issue, you only raise public ire. Ram Setu is important not just because it has religious and heritage value but also of other reasons, such as: the effect it has on controlling tsunamis which if enters India would have serious implications on our coastal life, fisherman, business and economy. Estimates suggest that it preserves huge marine life and corals, through which our fisherman do business worth more than Rs 150 crore annually. It also preserves thorium deposits that are so valuable for India's nuclear power; and above all it provides a security cover by keeping other foreign elements from crossing over. Also India has been saying that these are historic waters, which if opened up through the present route as suggested, would only support the US directive that says that water between India and Srilanka are international waters, thus allowing foreign elements through these ways and posing a serious threat to our security.

It is these issues that should be highlighted and public opinion garnered in favor, not only in Delhi but in those places also which are more prone to the dangers. By Chakka Jams, an important issue instead of getting public support gets lost as only a political gimmickry.
