Ban is not the cure
by Niranjana R on Sep 11, 2007 08:15 PM

Banning sale of mobiles to kids below 16 years is not the right thing to do. Use of mobile in the schools (up to Class X) is necessary to be restricted but by educating the kids and their parents about it rather than banning which can hardly be implemented effectively. Mobiles have acquired a snob value among the young impressionable people. More than the governement ban or disciplinary methods by school teachers, it is the parents who have to realize that mobile is hardly a necessary tool for the kids during school period. If grown ups stop using mobile phones as an appendage to their ears, to talk about anything and everything and restrict it to talks up to 2-3 minutes (may be a maximum of 5 minutes)at a time to communicate messages, the children would also learn a thing or two about using the phone. All the TV shows, polls etc asking for the mobile users to send SMS to express their opinions on trivial things, should be discouraged by the enlightened grown ups. I do not know how many users are aware that most of such SMS cost much more than a normal SMS.
In the end it is more about educating and not banning - not just mobile phones but anything with carries a snob value.
