The Iran angle will always be a matter for concern for the US. Their vehement opposition to the Pipeline by the US is not because of the reason that India would get a good relief in its energy front, but because the benefit Iran would be getting might be mis-utilized.
Anyway, the US does wish India to be in line with what they think should be done to contain other country, as much as they wish other countries to do the same, to contain India.
