yes it is symbolic. like the word "mother tongue", that is used to indicate one's first language. i think there is nothing wrong in it. i am a hindu, but not a believer of the devi's. i would not like to worship DEVIs or (MATAs). but i feel it is okay to call the country of birth my motherland.
