Why is that in a democracy people are relevant only as far as voting is concerned. Once they vote next five their voices, their concerns, their emotions and their intelligence is a no use to anyone.
India is power starved growing economy. How much coal can we dig out of earth and how much can we import? Our gas reserves are not any great thing to write home about and our hydro power is very vagrant. certainly nuclear power is one great option. If we look at France which has been stymied by lack of conventional power producing resources. They turned to nuclear power. Today 75% of the power produced in France is nuclear power. So the importance of nuclear power option for India need not underlined.
But unfortunately any of the political parties are not interested in the main issue. If the opppsition has some issues with the Nuclear agreement why did not the congress explain their stand to the citizens of the country? why are they choosing to soft pedal on the whole issue. Certainly, if the treaty has objectionable clauses as far as the defence nuclear program is concerned they should be discussed in open. On major issues like this we could even have an national referendum after all the citizens have been informed about the ramifications of the agreement.
