Drop the left - not the deal
by Mahesh Nathan on Oct 21, 2007 04:46 AM

The deal was conceived to help India deal with its growing energy demands and will help the economy in the long run.
Th left's complaint with the deal is just the fact that the deal is with the US, which is capitalist and they have are a socialist party. Socialism or communism is a failed governance concept that has been shunned by the very countries from where it originated i.e the Eastern bloc. Even the Chinese government practices socialism from a military aspect, their governance has been highly capitalistic as can be observed by their growing economy. Socialism consists of two classes, the people who enforce it and those who are subjugated to live under these rules. Its easy for the rule enforcers to practice the values of communism. I have a lot of Russian friends who have told me about the horrors of living under the communist regime - no freedom etc. The left just wants to prove their might to the government even if it is against the country's benefit.
We have to expect compromises for this to go through -even the US govt is under international pressure for making a deal with India who has not complied with CTBT (India need not comply im my opinion but that's another argument). Hope that this deal goes through for the country's sake
