RE:Does India need nuclear deal?
by Jit Dutta on Oct 17, 2007 03:10 AM

Dear hyd user,
India needs the nuclear deal for several reasons. India needs the deal to have another major source of energy to sustain the GDP growth rate (and yes to create jobs for folks like you), to access other high-tech which is currently denied due to NPT, to gain diplomatic stature that comes with being recognized as a de-facto nuclear power (a la China). Before you come up with coal energy, please consider that with global warming and pollution crisis it is becoming untenable to massively ramp up coal based power production, with oil is approaching $100/bl India doesn't have very many choices to produce power. As for other alternate sources of energy i.e., solar or wind power etc they are not yet scalable or cost effective enough that is needed to power up anation of billion people with a 9% growth rate. Finally, a deal which China, Pakistan and CPM oppose so badly, how can it be bad for India?

Hope it clears up your confusion, hyd user!
