What you say is wrong. Does respecte the religious sentiments of the majority Tamil Hindus? No.
I also came across this below comment "Thru a relative of mine, I have found that many CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) schools in Tamil Nadu continue to impose Hindi (as compulsory subject), while Tamil can be conveniently skipped.
