Putting myself in Todi's shoes
by dip dutt on Nov 06, 2007 12:45 AM

Well, for a change let me be Ashok Todi, an astute patriarch who wants to control her daughter's life with iron gloves. Let me also assume that I am extremely sensitive to my social standing, which to me holds more weight than an individual's right to choose. And in a keen agreement to Mr. Arun's views let me also claim to be one of the thousands of dads who want to see their daughter economically prosperous and happy which the shanties of Tiljala would not have provided.

In that case, isn%u2019t it better that I spent my lakhs of rupees in bootstrapping Rizwan%u2019s career into a more successful one (either by sponsoring a business or an education), rather than on hiring goons and bribing officials. Rizwan was a self-made person from humble origin, he was no idiot and hence such a gesture would not have gone in waste..

Before anyone points out that it would be another form of patriarchy which would strangle Rizwan and Priyanka for the rest of the lives, let me point out that it would be a better of the choices under the circumstances (reforming Ashok Todi is an ideal option but not a practical one)%u2026In lot of ways his option would be a win-win. Given that Ashok Todi%u2019s son-in-law would anway inherit his empire, it would have been inevitable anyway..
