from my research on history [not what we were taught by NCERT, propogated by congressis or RSS] , early british rulers were anti-missionaries themselves. McCaulay clearly mentioned that missonaries must not be allowed to spread in india, and his minutes on indian IPC clearly reflect his desire on india be a secular place. had they been let loose by early brits, we know how effective they are in the art of pursuasion. like it or not, that is what i've observed
