Democracy in Pakistan
by Vikas Sethi on Jun 19, 2007 06:03 PM

America was selfish when it initially did not support the dictator and they criticized it. After the 9/11 u-turn, when America started supporting the dictator and started showering money on the beleaguered country, they relished the thought of being a Non NATO ally. It was the dictators ace foreign policy feat. Today, because America has not yet jumped into their democracy bandwagon %u2013 as per their fancy, they are critical of it. Instead of self sacrificing and gaining democracy the hard way (so that they value it %u2013 something that happened in Nepal), they look to America and the world at large, to hand it on a platter to them. Is the common Pakistani still ready to sacrifice for democracy %u2013 a few letters written in newspapers, a lawyers protest or a small group of journalist protesting (that too when pushed against the wall) is just not sufficient, although it could be a good beginning.

To me it seems to be a simple case of what in India is referred to as %u2018an anti %u2013 incumbency factor%u2019. When they had democracy they murdered it themselves. Now they desire it. 4-6 years of democratic rule and these guys will again need a dictator %u2013 to save them. Only God can save them.
