Dear Mr chatterjee , Caste system was an efficient tool in prehistoric time ...when there was no instituionalisation of knowledge in any forms and hence hereditarty transformation was seen as a solution.It never referred to degrading in away ..degradation occoured later on.....In away u r right now we dont need such a system...but the phenomenon of using a knowledge domain to ones benefit is still existent ...example americans telling the world not to make nuclear energy or bombs ...do we have a check on this even now no...so in a way castism was a good solution at a point of time but certainly not now....and i dont think u got to be a muslim or christian for such reasons because they have there own issues as well...with the interpretration of things ...
