Jesus asked for faith and obedience. All inventions are a product of rebellious nature and inquisitive mind. The church has opposed all major discoveries right through history and still does. The west progressed not because of jesus and his teachings, but because it chose to ignore those teachings.
The general public by and charge just goes through the motions of going to church, but general societal life has evolved away from christ (bars, fun, sex (all kinds), science, and I am not saying these as negatives). They just don't care to assert that they no longer are not following christ's teachings, it's probably a waste of time or inertia (as for most of us for our respective religions). The bottomline, the west got over it by and large, let us.
