God is everywhere, not just in temple. You can pray anywhere, to any object. But in order to follow that logic, you need to experiment with life like the great saints of the past did, you really have the true experience of the existance of God thru experiments and research the science of coincidences. Once you are 100% convinced of the existance of God, you do not need temples or any objects for worship.
Temple is for common people like us to run to when in grief. It is a place where people should come with pure mind. In such a place, when people gather and talk and socialize, that is a better social process than when the same set of people socialize in a Bar. That is because in temple, you try to avoid all bads in you. In bar there is no such restriction.
So in older times, temples were intended as a place where people socialize in its best way which would create a positive impact in the society. Even though the original intention was that, I suspect that intention has ever been practised.
Today, temples are just a ritual place. People go there, pray, pay cash for poojas, priest does something nobody knows what, priest makes rules to protect his jobs.
Who is a hindu ? Can anyone answer. As long as noone can answer, noone can restrict non-hindus. Whoever believes in god is hindu. How can someone distinguish between Jesus and Krishna. If anyone does that he has no knowledge of Vedas and upanishads. Sankaracharya's advaitha is the core of hinduism.
