We all know Sanjay Dutt as he is a public figure and with that benefit we are saying he is a good person and may be does not deserve this punishment. We have seen him give interviews to TV channels which show him in a very sorry state, he says with innocence in his eyes that he loves our country and is not a terrorist. May be he is true. But how many other such undertrials for similar crimes have the chance to give TV interviews and gain our sympathy. What about many other hundreds of thousands who do not have the benefit of being a public figure and their cases are heard purely on the basis of evidence provided without the people like us having the benefit of the knowledge about their conduct otherwise. In any case the punishments have two purposes. One to actually punish the criminal for the crime and second to give a signal to the other potential offenders. In India there are hundreds of thousands of people who have spent years in jail waiting just for their cases to be heard for petty crimes, let alone many more who are spending years in jail as Punishment for petty crimes as they could not afford to pay the bail amount.
Should the situation improve in general definitely..should law be equal to all definitely
