Idol worship, gives image to the person (GOD) that we need to speak our hearts out. As stated by sankaracharya, even Vedas must be left down, when you want to go to higher level of realization.
At this stage, we need something to hold one, something to give image to. Idol worship is just a path, where you can put a face to the person that you speak to.
Muslims use cresent moon Christians use Jesus, cross etc.
So Idol worship is correct and it helps in upliftment. (here I am discussing about genuine worship, people have taken to few steps ahead of declaring normal stones as God, which I definitely oppose).
