I think you should be reading declassified CIA reports (available in any public library in the US) on US Mid East / S. Asian policy from the 60s up to the late 80s (breakup of USSR) if you want to know how fanatical Islam came to be.
Fanatical ISlam was used as a tool by the US CIA to combat anti Western Socialist / Communist leaning governments in the Middle East and South Asia (Nasser's Egypt, SOcialist Afghanistan etc).
The Al Sauds. Bin Laden. Al Zawahiri. Anbar Ul Islam. PuK. The Taliban. All were shaped by the CIA and were on US payroll. Now that the communists are gone, it seems that the falcons have turned against their old falconers...
Before fanatical Islam, it was drugs. Before that, it was the "Godless Communists". I wonder who the next enemy is?
