You are absolutely right. Trains abroad have large glass windows which can be removed entirely during an emergency. Indian railways not only puts bars, but also puts wire-mesh grills on top of the bars (possibly to protect from stone throwing... everybody loves destroying state property to protest, even when it has nothing to do with the state). Safely and indian railways are antonyms. The number of train accidents itself gives you an idea... our coaches havent evolved in design since the british left India...
