It didn't disapper, ashoka himself was a hindu who converted to buddhism. Most people didn't convert. Also Buddhism and Jainism were just branches of the same Indian culture. There was no concept of religion in India before islam and christianity because people were free to believe in any and as many form of god as they chose.
