Who is a secularist?
by VASUDEVAN V on Dec 24, 2007 12:54 PM

All the `secular%u2019 politicians and the secular media say is that Modi has won on `communal%u2019 agenda, defeating the `secular%u2019 opposition. They are unable to digest his outstanding victory! However, no one is ready to say whether there are any true `secularists%u2019 left in this country. One should read the article `Elixir of India%u2019 by Soli J.Sorabjee, former attorney-general of India, about Secularism in the latest issue of `The WEEK%u2019 to really know what true secularism is. He says: According to Pandit Nehru, a secular state %u201Cdoes not obviously mean a state, where religion is discouraged. It means freedom of religion and conscience, including freedom for those who have no religion, subject only to their not interfering with each other in the basic conception of our state%u201D. Going by this realistic definition, one can say that there are no real secularists in India any more. The pet pastime of the secularists is `Hindu%u2019 bashing to garner minority votes. He further says that a secular state cannot directly or indirectly, by way of subsidy or otherwise extend financial assistance to religious activities. Hence, he says that subsidizing the Haj is wrong and contrary to the spirit of Article 27 of our constitution! Given the race among our `secular%u2019 politicians to appease the minorities for their votes, it is hardly surprising that there are no true seculars in our country and there are only fundamental secularists, who are more dangerous
