Modi's Gujarat
by Krishna Padmanabhan on Dec 25, 2007 04:02 AM

I was living in Baroda at the time of the last riots. Whatever be the provocation, I do not agree with the violence meted out to innocent people, especially helpless women and children, whatever be their religion.

Muslims cannot escape part of the blame for what is happeneing to them in India. Way back in the 90's, there was a terrifying sense of unity within the muslim community which was leveraged to wreck fear and havoc on the substantially larger but heavily fragmented hindu society. While I do not in any way support communal violence, I still feel that the muslim community cannot fight with the hindus in India - it simply will not work.

The best way forward is therefore for both communities not to let the hatred of the past destroy the present and the future. The Gujarat government under Modi has a key responsibilty in this - to bring the pepetrators of the Godra attrocity and the perpetrators of the senseless violence that followed in its wake, to book. The moot point, however, is whether Modi thinks he should.
