That was not a thousand years ago. The Tamil Kingdonof Jaffna and the Sinhala Kingsom of Kotte was captured aorudn 1620 by the Portuguese. The Sinhala kingdom of Kandy and the independent Tamil Vanni was captures by the British in 1815 and 1820 respectively . It was the British who united the Tamil and Sinhala speking parts of the country in 1833 as one country, this was done for thier administrative convenniance. Prior to that there was not country called Sri Lanka it was always divided on liguistic and ethnic lines as seperate kingdoms. The Prtuguese and the Dutch also recognised the seperate identies of these two people and also were aware of the mutual enemity and rivalry of these two people for the past 2500 years and ruled the Sinhala and Tamil speaking portions in the island which was under their control as seperate colonies.
