RE:religion and nationality.
by Prakash Desai on Dec 18, 2007 03:57 AM

Dear Sir,
One small correction
Mohammad Ali Jinnah did not converted himself to islam, It was his father
His father was a Gujarati from Lohana community
His father's full name was
Zinabhai Poonjabhai Thakkar
( it can be spelled as Jhinabhai also)
He himself was converted to muslim, and he named his son as Mohammad Ali
Now, when Mohmmad Ali grew up with his own identity, he was ashamed of his father's hindu name.
And under normal circumstances, his traditional full name would be Mohammad Ali Zinabhai Thakkar
So, he changed, rather shortened his name, dropped surname Thakkar and respelled father's name from Zinabhai or Jhinabhai to Jinnah and created it as surname for his muslim identity.
Thus he became Mohammad Ali Jinnah
