The arduous path away from subservience
by Chakravarthy Muralidhar on Aug 30, 2007 12:14 PM

Why this urge and the itch to tie ourselves to this deal?Partly,it is also an outlet for our unrewarded, shabbily treated scientific community in our country. Our nuke and space scientists had become'untouchables' in the last 33 years. The western powers decided to isolate them from mutual interactions, intellectual exchanges, etc. They endured it and accepted the challenge the world imposed on us in the name of halting proliferation. Our bureaucrats and the ruling political class took it as an opportunity to exploit our own scientists by keeping their salaries at subsistence levels.Witness the emoluments of BARC,ISRO,DRDO scientists even to this day and compare them with that of the IAS,IFS babus! They did it gleefully, knowing that these brilliant,ever-striving but unfortunate denizens cannot hope to leave this land! Many scientists have expressed their despire in not being allowed to work to their full potential witihin the country, while at the same time not being able to seek opportunities elsewhere beyong the shores on account of the 'apartheid' practiced against India. This desperation and the insensitivity of our own political masters has finally culminated in submitting to the designs of the US strategists. Now with this deal, the Indian scientists & engineers in space, nuke and other vital and strategic fields become attractive quarry for these growing sectors in the affluent parts of western world! At least they can hope to be respected elsewhere if not honored back home!!
