It would not accomplish anything to lock him up for 5 years for killing an animal, where billions of animals are sacrificed everyday to support the food chain throughout the World.
The only difference is that he unintentionally happen to kill a chinkara,an endangered specie in the dead of the night. It could have been some other animal. How would he have known in the darkness? I believe the requisite intent to commit crime is lacking here, and conviction should not have been upheld.
However,it appears that the appropriate sentence would be to fine him heavily perhapes equal to his gross income for a year. This money can be used to support the protection programs for such species and for general public awareness and education.
Salman is just as much of an endangered specie as Chinkara and deserves as much respect. Punish him but don't kill him. Five years in jail would kill him mentally and physically .
