What position will Japan express?
by Melanie Kumar on Aug 15, 2007 02:03 PM

It is not clear what Japan means when it says that it will express it's position on the Indo-US nuclear deal. This country has made use of nuclear energy for "peaceful" purposes but successive governments have kept the risks under wraps. There was a recent newspaper report about a leakage at one such site. There have been others earlier and this was corroborated by people during our visit to Japan. It is surprising that a country with a pacifist philosophy should risk the health of its citizens through the "peaceful" use of nuclear energy. The fact is that nuclear energy is never safe whether used for making weapons or for" peaceful" purposes. The effects of uranium can last for generations and it would be wise for people across the world to make themselves aware of what their governments fail to tell them.
