The recent news that 14 percent of those who qualified to the IIT were BCs who got through the general qouta. This means that these young men and women had the wherewithal to afford quality education to get into an IIT. This in itself shows that its the well to do and rich among BCs who are actually cornerning the benefits of reservation. The poor BC student still has no chance as his basic education level is so bad that he or she cannot aspire to get into an institute of higher learning.
What we need is reservations based on economic condition of the family. Be it a Brahmin or a ST student, let them avail of benefits if the family is truly backward, economically. Today we have the kids of Ram Vilas Paswan and Laloo Prasad Yadav cornering all the seats.
This process of educating the poor students should start from the primary level. Why should these students study in good for nothing government schools. Why cannot rich people sponsor one poor child each in a good English medium school. Pay their fees, for the books, uniforms and track how well these kids are doing. If need be, pay for their special tutions too. We have so many of us blowing up money in a KFC or a McDoanlds, when it can educate a child. Let us start the charity from home... Think about it.
