So what if Haneef is earning out of his media conferences? Nothing wrong in that. He has suffered enough, and more cash in the pocket never hurts anyone. The Aussie govt is hell bent on justifying its stand in the run up to elections. But the fact remains that in India, the prosecuting authority would never have admitted to its mistake and dropped charges, and that is why so many undertrials are languishing in filthy jails for years on the flimsiest of grounds, pending the outcome of their trials. Credit must go to the Australian prosecuting agency for being man enough to admit a mistake. Haneef ought to be eternally grateful to the Australian public and their media without whose support he would not be a free man today.
