Exact meaning of Greek President's message
by KK Baranwal on Apr 27, 2007 12:42 PM

The Greek President said at the start of his speech"Rashtrapatm Mahabhaga, sur swagatam yavana dishe" It does not mean "Mr President, welcome to you" as reported by you, but exactly it means, "Mr. President, Nice/auspicious welcome in Yavan country" In all the Sanskrit classics, the Greeks were referred as 'Yavans' and Greek nation as 'Yavan Desh'. The Hindi word 'Unan', by which Greece is known in Hindi, has been derived from Sanskrit word 'Yavan'. Nothing can be a greater testimony to the ancient Indo-Greek relationship than the Unani system of medicine, prevalent in India, having named after Greece. This system of medicine is well recognised by Govt. of India and has it's independent Medical Colleges and practitioners.
