Upper castes are a problem
by Anurag Shrivastava on Apr 23, 2007 05:13 PM

The Supreme Court order is only a small bump in the path towards changing the power structure in the society. Its nobody's argument that reservations is NOT about giving opportunities to the under-priviledged to come up. It is about the landed middle castes like the Yadavas , Vokalliggas and the like wanting to increase their influence on the society. Smart politicians like Mayawati are aware that the Dalits are under as much threat as the Brahmins and is trying to build a coalition of upper and lower castes. The upper castes , however , do not realise that Dalits are their biggest allies in the end and that if upper castes start treating Dalits with compassion and fairness, the threat of the land owning middle castes - who have money but are very violent can be met. Unfortunately - most upper castes continue to believe in rituals and practices which are insulting to lower castes. Its in the interest of upper castes to launch a struggle to remove all caste identities ; and the threat of reservations will go on its own.
