Mullahs, Maulanas and Babu Bajrangi ...
by Anurag Shrivastava on Apr 23, 2007 02:41 PM

Different sides , same coin. Democracy in poorly educated countries only results in allowing religious fanatics to grab power some day. In India - thanks to the caste divide , the Babu Bajrangis are kept out of power. Pakistan and Bangladesh may not be so lucky in future. In Nepal - communists maybe the flavour of the season - but long term I see Nepal becoming a Hindu Rashtra once democracy becomes entrenched and people get disillusioned with Maoists. Poor countries need a guided democracy - a secular elite that makes such ground rules that religious parties are never allowed to either take power or have any influence on state policies. Countries like US which are far more developed have better mechanisms - like the Christian oriented rule of George Bush will get replaced by secular democrats as Bush went a little over board with his war on terror.
