Atleast for next 20 years or so, US would be the pre-eminent power and the gatekeeper of NSG. If the deal breaks down, there is no reason why it can not be restarted when the next US Prez takes over. Instead of reacting against US, it may be advisable to explore the possibility of continuing the trust building measures in the domain of security matrix and economic linkages. A reasoned and caliberated response to US let down would avoid damage to the present day stakeholders and enhance India's perceptions in the eyes of still suspicious Americans.
