A close scrutiny may show that loans (from loansharks at exhorbitantly criminal usurious rate) for dowries and weddings feature prominently in these suicides, as crops fail due to drought, making it impossible to repay even the interest, far les the loan itself. To say that the govts are useless do-nothings would be the understatement of the year - only with elctions on the horizon do politicians become "concerned" about the epidemic of suicides. Unless govt start regulating loan-sharks, and start providing farmers access to capital at reasonable rates and terms, then suicides will become the norm rather than the exception. Govt must also take steps to prevent excessive expenses incurred on weddings and such like - may high-handed but necessary under the circumstances.
