Tribute to Kanshi Ram
by Vidya Bhushan Rawat on Oct 11, 2006 01:07 PM

It is true that Kanshi Ram was a great mobiliser whose experiment in Uttar-Pradesh gave Dalits a new voice of dignity and Self respect. It is understandable from those who felt jolted by the UP experiment to term Kanshiram as a casteist fellow. Ofcourse, people do not call those casteist who washed temples, court premises, statues after some Dalit leaders passed through the place. we wll know how Kamala Pati Tripathi in Varanasi had got Gandhi's statue washed with Gangajal after Jagjivan Ram had offered garland to Gandhiji.

Kanshiram, unlike Jagjivan Ram was a strong Ambedkarite who felt that it was better to make Dalit strong by increasing their democratic power and make alliance with backward communities. Today, whatever, the Savarnas may claim, Kanshraim remained the tallest Dalit leader in the Post Ambedkar Era. One may disagree with him but can not ignore his contribution to the rise of Ambedkarite movement in India.
